MATERIALS

What is cast iron? (Wikipedia)

Cast iron is an alloy of iron poured into moulds, carbon (2.5%-6.67%), manganese and silicon. It is manufactured by melting of pig irons, together with coke and lime in a cupola furnace, induction furnace or a drum oven. Because of the roughness of the form is the appearance of the cast iron object clearly to recognize as such.

What is the advantage of cast iron?

Cast iron is qualitatively the best material for a fire bowl, because it is fire resistant and does not deform and is less rust sensitive than steel. When fire bowls made from steel are heated, every time you heat the fire bowl a layer is going off, which means that durability is relatively short. Cast iron is therefore the best material for frequent heating en also often used in stoves and fireplaces.

What is Corten steel or COR-TEN steel? (Wikipedia)

Corten steel (or COR-TEN steel) also known as atmospheric corrosion steel, is a metal alloy consisting of iron to which copper, phosphorus, silicon, nickel and chromium are added. Weathering steel, best-known under the trademark COR-TEN steel, is a group of steel alloys which were developed to eliminate the need for painting, and form a stable rust-like appearance if exposed to the weather for several years. The strength is similar to that of other steel alloys such as stainless steel. Characteristic of Corten steel is on the one hand the brown orange rust colour and on the other hand the long life. The first corrosion layer protects de product from further rusting. This type of metal is used for many purposes including artefacts, siding, Garden decoration etc. The 2nd largest suspension bridge in the world is made of Corten steel. This bridge never needs to be painted, because of the characteristics of Corten steel.

What is stainless steel? (Wikipedia)

Stainless steel is an alloy of mainly iron, chromium, nickel and carbon. To be able to speak of stainless steel, you need at least 11 to 12% chromium and not more than 1.2% carbon. Furthermore, in many kinds of stainless steel are also the elements, molybdenum, titanium, manganese, nitrogen and selenium. Your Services uses Stainless steel 420 for her BQ grills.

What is stress-free steel?

The GrillRings are made of high quality 8mm hardened steel. The steel has been made stress-free by heat treatment, which minimizes the risk of warping and hardens the surface. Ideal for easy and hygienic baking of your products, roasting, grilling and cooking.

TIPS

Can I promote the rust process?

In order to obtain the desired rust colour as soon as possible you can wash the product with household vinegar. After two hours  wash off with water. Herewith you remove the carbon layer and within 2 days the first rust veil will appear. If necessary repeat this process.

Does the fire bowl also require maintenance?

To slow down the rust process you can, before using the first time, swipe the inside of the fire bowl with household oil. During burning the porous holes will close and the rusting process will be delayed. Especially on the inside, this will benefit the sustainability of the fire bowl.

By purchasing a cover plate ' The Top ', the life span of the underlying products is significantly increased.

Does the fire bowl have a water drain?

The fire bowl does not have a water drain, because this is not always desired. Think of the rust and soot in combination with rain water, for example, on a marble floor. If you place the fire bowl on an appropriate location, you can carefully drill one or more holes into the bottom of the fire bowl. If drilling holes is objectionable for you, then you can indicate this when ordering. For a little extra amount we can take care for a water drain for 1 or 2 small holes of 0.8 to 1 cm. This fire bowl cannot be returned.

An ideal solution to keep rainwater out is ‘The Top’: The Top made from Corten steel prevents your fire bowl from filling up with rainwater. The top can also quickly extinguish the fire, so you do not have to worry about possible fire splashing’s etc., With the Top the bowl can be used as garden table. See for more information on the website under Accessories.

GRILLRING USER INSTRUCTIONS, TIPS AND MAINTANANCE

How do I install the GrillRing?

The GrillRing 80 and 90 are adjustable in height. By loosening the bolts at the bottom and placing the support element inside or outside, you can adjust the grill ring in height. Use the scratched stripes to determine the height at which you want to place the ring and tighten the bolts at an equal distance. This is important for the pressure distribution to the scale. We recommend placing the GrillRing about one cm below the edge of the bowl so that you can cover the scale with the TOP and so does not touch the GrillRing.

Make sure that the bowl and GrillRing are adjusted horizontal.

The GrillRing 60 and 72 can be placed directly into the fire bowl. Make sure that the bowl and GrillRing are adjusted horizontal. After multiple due to grease in the bowl the GrillRing may slide a bit. This problem will be solved by placing the supplied hook below the widest side of the GrillRing.

How do I use the GrillRing for the first time?

You will receive the GrillRing in a rust free condition. Clean The GrillRing with water and a non-aggressive detergent. To avoid rust formation, you should immediately grease the grill ring with your preferred oil.

We recommend using an oil with a high combustion rate (> 180 degrees). Greasing should take place before, during and after every use of the GrillRing. With a starting normal olive oil you get the most beautiful black color/protective layer on your GrillRing.

Heat the first half hour with a small fire, so that the GrillRing can 'settle down'. This minimises possible warping. By the unique concept of the GrillRing the excess fat will always be led into the scale. After this first heating procedure you can create your desired fire/heat at any moment. Due to the combustion process, the ring will eventually be completely black.

How should I maintain the GrillRing?

Intermediate cleaning with the spatula 'The Turner' is sufficient. You simply scrape the excess fat into the fire. After use, remember to grease the ring again to prevent rust formation. Place the GrillRing, especially if you are not using it for a longer period of time, in a moisture-free area. CO-FIRE takes no responsibility for the development of rust formation. Any rust formation is easy to be remove with wool and/or fine sanding paper.

What kind of wood can be used?

We recommend to use good dried wood as oak/beech/ash/birch or the wat harder wood types. Make sure it is thinly split with a maximum thickness of 10 cm. These types of wood and size minimize the splashing of sparks and ensure the preservation of the flaming game. Do not use other materials such as paper, plastics, etc. (for example, glued wood) because toxic gases that may come free.

Heating and cooking advices?

You can easily ignite the fire by using small wood strips and/or create cubes in the starting point. The GrillRing reaches relatively fast (> 30 minutes) the desired boil/roast temperature. By moving the fire you can apply accents in terms of warmth and different heat zones on the GrillRing where you can sear meat, vegetables can kept yarn or sauces warm. The experience will teach you to use this GrillRing in your purpose. Excessive heating is not necessary and could even lead to the warping of the plate during extreme heating.

How can fire be extinguished best?

Let the fire extinguish itself. Probably abundant but the fire should never be extinguished with water. This would allow the bowl to break. Should it start raining, cover everything with the cover plate “The Top". The Top also ensures that you can leave the fire place with a good feeling, even though the fire still glows. There can be no ash blown or sparks jumping away. The Top also ensures that nearly no rainwater enters de bowl, protects your product and extends its live circle. The Top also allows you to use the set as a table. Note: After the fire has been extinguished the bowl and possibly the Top can still be warm/hot!

The ash can be removed best with sweeper and gaze. You can leave or remove the GrillRing. However, make sure that the fire and the shaft are completely cooled! The grill ring is easy to clean with a spatula. Do not forget to grease the GrillRing with oil again in order to prevent rust formation in the beginning.
